So I've lied about coming back in a week's time to the blogging world. Like a few months ago (a few months? Ha, yeah right. Let's just put it as 7 months ago to be more precise), I was busy looking for a job. Then I got the job, then I was busy adapting to the working world. Then I've gotten used to my job, I've started becoming busy marking my students' papers. Then by and by, I just realised that I've stopped blogging for 7 months. My friends had to BEG me to come back. It was dead awful. I've become quite lethargic and morose lately. It's like I have this one giant checklist where I tick off the things that I've done and achieved so far. Then there's one thing I haven't achieved yet. That is, getting a guy who wants a solid relationship with me. My love life just sucks. A LOT. But okay, it's not like I'm going to talk about how sucky my love life is, aight? Let's be giddy for awhile and kick ass! So yeah, I love chocolates. Do you like chocolates too? ;)

Happy Halloween everyone. I'm back after centuries hiding in the middle earth. I kid. Of course I've been busy with work I haven't had the time to blog. Latest news about me is...(well I'm quite aware that nobody wants to know but I'd still like to tell anyway) I am now working at my ever beloved university, IIUM as a part-time English tutor. Then used to be a student there. Now, a teacher. I know it's odd but still! I love the job so much. So there, enough about me. The charming picture above is taken from i am krisan's photostream. The History Boys

Feeling a bit literary today, I decided to write on the adapted Brit movie 'The History Boys'. Set in the early 80's in Cutler's Grammar School in Sheffield, a fictional grammar school in north England, The History Boys centres on the group of history pupils preparing for the Oxbridge entrance examinations under the guidance of three teachers-- Hector, Irwin and Lintott all with contrasting teaching styles. Hector despises exams and encourages his pupils to use their imagination to understand History. Through an unconventional way of teaching, Hector had also assigned them reading materials which will not come out in their exams (which was a bit of a laugh there). Irwin on the other hand is the total opposite of Hector, who believes that education is calculative and is focused on getting his pupils to write essays backed up by facts and evidence that would engage the examiners' interest. Lintott tries to invoke feminist ideas in history. Enough of my brief summary there. You might want to catch the movie yourself. Perhaps get a DVD of it.

Weekend off

I apologise again for not updating my posts for quite a long time now. I just need some time away from the blogging world to sit down and carefully draft my resumé. The first time I'm writing it, I feel completely nervous. And I'm definitely nervous for job interviews. But don't worry. I'll be back by next week I promise. Well whatever it is, last Saturday my sister and I baked these gorgeous gingerbread men cookies which I dug out from 'Simply Recipes'. Surprisingly, they taste good. I know it's not Christmas but I've been craving for gingerbread men since last year. They don't even sell gingerbread men here for Christmas. I guess it has something to do with the number of Malaysians who actually eats them. Not many Malaysians are in love with gingerbread men anyways. I guess that explains it. But anyways, yeah see you all around soon :)

This particular shot from Trevor is a recreation of a drawing scene from a wild wild west movie. Using toys as his props and shooting from the angles that would bring back memories of such "cheesy classic scene", Trevor has managed to bring the picture come to life. Art is after all, wonderful.

Nubrella

The nubrella is an Alan Kaufman invention which is "worn with a harness, and closes around its user like a clear, private cocoon, guaranteed never to turn inside out". Seems like a brilliant idea and it does make the wearer look sophisticated in it. And it is effective to avoid your hair from getting wet, or allows you to talk on the phone without having to hold an umbrella. However, it's not that effective to cover the wearer from head to toe. Expensive suits will surely be drenched in the rain and that brings about the question as to how convenient nubrellas are.

The Impossible Art of Li Wei

Chinese artist Li Wei has produced a baffling series of self-portraits that seem physically impossible. What seems even more baffling is that the photographs were not created using Photoshop. Li Wei started off his performance series ‘Mirroring’ and later on took off attention with his ‘Falls’ series which pictures the artist with his head and chest embedded into the ground. His work is a mixture of performance art and photography that creates illusions of a sometimes dangerous reality. Li Wei states that these images are not computer montages and works with the help of props such as mirrors, metal wires, scaffolding and acrobatics. Choco Pick of The Week: {Sara De Bondt}

This week's CPOTW is London-based Belgian graphic designer, Sara De Bondt. Sara studied graphic design at Sint-Lukas, Brussels (B), Universidad de Bellas Artes, Granada (ES) and Jan van Eyck Akademie, Maastricht (NL). Her designs can sometimes be a reminiscent of the minimalist 60's designs which had typewritten, stenciled-like typography and washed out colour images.

This is taken from one of the series of her self-published postcards entitled 'Letters'.

Sara's design for 'Out of the Ordinary:Spectacular Craft' (2007), an exhibition graphics and catalogue for V&A Museum.

Mary Wells is just so sweet. And it proves that you need not take a full portrait of yourself or your friends to begin with to get an equally great shot. The picture above is entitled 'I know there's chocolate somewhere'. I can't help grinning looking at it and when I read the caption, my grin just got bigger. It goes:

"Hunting for chocolate in the pantry at work while Naomi took a nap. I found some dark chocolate kisses.... I ate some, even though I prefer milk creamy chocolate.

She designs dresses from paperbags, creates posters of teabags and makes tapestries out of...scrolls of what seems like pages which had been ripped off from a novel! That's just so bizarre! This week's CPOTW is Carrie Chau, Hong Kong-based artist and graduate from the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong and the Kent Institute of Art & Design, England. Carrie’s works depict the daily life as funny, positive, with an eerie touch of delicacy. Through her drawings and 3D sculptures, she represents swollen and joyful characters which seems to be inspired by jumping jack, fairy tales where angels meet imps, and the animals from Noah’s Ark.

Carrie Chau:

“Sometimes I’m inspired by fairy tales; I like fairy tales such as Blue Beard, The Emperor’s new clothes. But not the Cinderella, snow white or such kind of story, too “sweet” for me.”

Butterfingers

I just found out about this music video made for Bomb the Bass from 30gms. It's called 'Butterfingers' and it's directed by Dieter and Lung from Perish Factory. For the unfamiliar, it’s an analogue synth/sequencer/groovebox made in felt. Each button and control has a unique character and role in the video that sustains viewing all the way to the witty end. In Dieter’s own words there was “no real trickery to the making of it, just lots of hands, a lot of puppets, a lot of takes and a crap load of duct tape in the back holding things together”. If you can't view it in Quicktime, click here to view in YouTube. Just be prepared to be charmed throughout the video. I was charmed fairly well.

This week's CPOTW is Jon Klassen, known for his collection of artwork posted on his site, 'Burst of Beaden'. Jon Klassen is also well known for his collaborated video 'An eye for Annai'- a witty, warm and humourous adventure of a one-eyed creature in search for its other eye. I love Klassen's work because they simply make me warm inside and out with those adorable typography and illustrations.

I better stop disappearing without giving any warning. People have started giving up on me. Well whatever it is, I've kept these Alice Burdeu pics since the last two weeks. Been meaning to post them up but never had the chance to. Now, I never knew who Alice Burdeu is until she modeled for Alexander McQueen's Elizabethan collection. Then I figured that she was season 1's winner of Australia's Next Top Model. What I have here are some of my favourite pieces she's modeled in. Seeing those clothes clinging to her just makes me even the more envious. Wish I had that bod of hers to begin with. Those clothes just look fab on her.

Choco Pick of the Week: {Ming Wang}

Since the Olympics is coming up in just a few months, I decided that I should post something up on the man behind the image, identity and design for the Beijing Olympic games-- Ming Wang. Wang was appointed as the Design Director for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in 2006. Together with his students at China Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), they have developed an exquisite and comprehensive design system for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Their work includes the athletic pictographic symbols, the Beijing Games emblem and their applications. All of these efforts address design planning through the development of extensive design standards manuals for the Beijing 2008 Olympics, and reaffirm the Olympic spirit and significance of this international multi-sporting event. It tends to follow the tradition of Olympic pictogram designs developed by art director Masaru Katzumie, who invented the first system of pictograms for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and who was concerned with the social importance of graphic design and the focus on an internationally standardised signage system.

Colm Keller, Chris Knox, and Bastian Bischoff; three MA design students at HDK – the School of Design and Crafts at Göteborg University, Sweden came up with a project where they designed, built and distributed the blue 'houses' (above) throughout Gothenburg, each one with statements about homelessness and encouraging people to respond by writing on the houses themselves.

I love this 'Sew What' (a clever pun of 'so what?') poster design by Peter Blake which was made for a contemporary textiles & surface design exhibition at the Spacex gallery in Exeter. Choco Pick of the Week: {Alexander McQueen}

This week's CPOTW is Alexander McQueen, the British designer who shook the whole world with his exquisite, painstakingly handwoven designs in his fall/winter 2008/09 collection. It took a lot of influences namely images of Queen Victoria, the Duke of Wellington, and the Indian Empire. One of my favourite pieces (I have a lot actually) is the pair of peacocks fashioned from cut out black lace with their tail feathers draping over ivory tulle petticoats that goes with the matching cut out black lace flaps. Well it's not enough just to talk about it, isn't it? Which is why I've included a video of the show below:

I apologise for my lack of posts again. Last week was the final exam week and I had to really devote myself to studies. The good news (well it may be a good news to me than it is to you) is, I've just graduated! Yippee hee :D But of course not officially because I'm still waiting for my results (hope it'll turn out fine). But whatever it is, let's just get onto today's post. I am currently loving the Jap drama series called 'Nodame Cantabile'. If you've never heard of it and is wondering what the hell I'm raving about, click here to get a brief synopsis on the series. I assure you it's very good. Especially if you're a big fan of orchestras and music generally. What I have here are some collection from Naf Naf I scoured over just to get the close resemblances of Noda Megumi's dresses. Some basics are knee length boots, tartan skirts and baby doll dresses.

So mark that down now. Today's CPOTW features a work from New York-based illustrator and designer, Liza Corbett. Her work as I see it has a grim and absurd outlook of life. Often they can be satirical. In the picture above for instance, we see attractive-looking balloons floating in the midst of industrial pollution, which is a shattering sight to see. It's Chinese New Year everyone! Yay! One thing I love about this country is that we get too much holidays. And now I'm on a two-days holiday myself, sitting back and enjoying life as the way it is.

Little Plane

Sometimes, it pays off to look at serene little things like these. Although I don't really agree with the title of the picture which goes "{January 24} coffee shop and felt like the photographer needed to rename the picture with "Little Plane" instead because the focus is obviously on the little plane and not on the coffee shop, I still think it's a wonderful picture nonetheless.

Simply Silhouettes

I love these silhouetted images from Simple Silhouettes. They're a reminiscent of the nineteenth century Southern American posters. I think the designer of Jack Johnson's album cover used a similiar approach to create a silhouetted figure by the tree. The designer of Simple Silhouettes is Meg Stearns. A 32-year old, mother of two who experiments with graphic design and art to explore her creative side. She recreates digital silhouettes from photos as well as making some limited edition prints drawn from her own inspiration. Bags of Goodwill

London design shop, twentwentyone has recently invited 40 world-renowned designers to join a a charity exhibition and auction called 'Bags of Goodwill' at the London Design Festival. Each of the designers were asked to place their own personal message on a plain tote bag that were later exhibited. Over £6010 was raised for the Fairtrade Foundation who will invest in their new project called the 'Fairtrade Schools'.

I love the quirky designs of Germano Facetti on the book covers above. They're so adorable, you won't realise they're serious books on politics and psychology.

Now is the time when I'm feeling all the pressure. The assignment datelines and societal meetings are all coming to me like an avalanche. It's as if they're trying to bury me alive or something. I know I may sound melodramatic but I need to stick my head out the window right now and SCREAM. Boy, am I stressed. Therefore, I'm declaring a week off from the blogging world to focus on whatever I'm supposed to be focusing on. Will be back by Thursday I suppose. And don't forget to check out 3191's latest post. That's right. The year of evenings have just begun.

Water

I insist all of you watch 'Water', the Deepa Mehta film. I just watched the movie for my World Literature class and it has really, really opened my eyes. Water is nothing like your typical Bollywood movies with heroes and heroines running around a big tree and rolling down the hill. It's a story of societal issues, the caste system in 1930s India--how society have deprived and exploited widows. And it's upliftling that, in the midst of depravation, India was given a new hope by the man who would change the fate of the nation, Mahatma Ghandi.

Rosaura, the little Bunny

I love bunnies. I have two stuffed bunnies in my room. But Rosaura is just so adorable. It looks like it was all ready for the camera, posed near the wall with two hands in the air, saying "Okay, I'm ready! Take me pic!" in a squeaky voice. Alright, I know I sound freaky. Rosaura wouldn't have said that. It's just a toy.

Necklaces and Postcards

I love this postcard necklace by Glittery Blue. And it seems a perfect gift for Valentine's. I love the sculpted pendant which reminds me of the illustrations found in Chaucer's works (something renaissance-like about it) and not to mention the beautifully sculpted leaves and postcard block. According to Shelley White, the designer of Glittery Blue products, she is an avid collector of vintage clothing and jewellery from the Victorian era to the 1940s, which is no doubt reflected in her products.

But nevertheless, the year of evenings are starting this January 15th and shall I say, that would be very very soon. And I am very much anticipating for it. So mark January 15 on your calendar folks! If only my literary books look like these, I'd be happy to read them from cover to cover. Sure thing, if you'd like to purchase one of these, you can get it for $1 from the Strand or you can get them from AbeBooks. But then of course, the drawback of ordering books online is that, you'll have to wait for at least 2 weeks for them to arrive at your doorstep (especially if they come all the way across the ocean). But then again, it's worth the wait, isn't it?
